Just when we thought she couldn’t be any more of a beach babe, our beloved Alessandra Ambrosio was seen sporting colorful mermaid braids on her recent vacation to Ibiza, Spain. If you haven’t seen it already on Instagram, the mermaid hair trend is becoming widely popular for its fantastical vibes, featuring various mixes of all colors in the rainbow. Before you run off to the salon and get your mer-mane, here are some helpful hints you should know about the look.
The Process
In order to get that magical array of rainbow locks, your hair first has to be bleached to create a blank canvas for the colors to be displayed on. Bleaching your hair down to platinum blonde can be really damaging to your hair. Be sure to be honest about your past hair treatments over the last two years so your hair stylist knows exactly what they’ve got to work with.
You’re Gonna Need Maintenance
Everyone lives for that fresh-out-the-salon feeling, but when it comes to vibrant, non-natural hair color, maintenance is a must. Besides getting minor touch-ups every 4 to 6 weeks, you can also do little things on a day-to-day basis to help elongate the life of your color:
- Try washing your hair less frequently; the oils in your hair help to protect the follicles from damage.
- When you do wash your hair, be sure to use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner. Sulphate can further dry out your hair and cause more long term damage.
- If your hair color starts turning brassy, invest in a toner treatment to help alter the color undertone into something more ideal. You can either do this at home or at the salon! You’ll only need to do this one every few weeks.
- Coconut oil is a great sealant and protectant from the sun’s harmful rays. When you’re hopping in the pool or headed to the beach, damp your hair with water and coconut oil to prevent discoloration.
